Greeting the New Year
Welcome to a new year and a new decade.
The above image comes from a project I began in 2019 and will continue in the new year, a series of paper cuts titled "Mother Trees," the theme is women’s voices on creativity, nature and spirituality. The title is inspired by ecologist, Suzanne Simard, who researches connections between trees in the forest and describes the mother trees as the oldest and most connected in the forest, the ones who nurture others. The voices I want to celebrate are those that have been most influential to my own journey and finding solace and sanctuary in art and nature.
You can see more images from this series and some images of the drawing and cutting process on my instagram feed @kathrynconeway.
Podcast Interview on Bear the Light Podcast
Bear the Light is a podcast hosted by Christianne Squires; my interview was released last week and can be accessed by clicking here or on the image below. It was a treat to be part of this rich conversation and to share ways art connects to healing, contemplation, spiritual practice and community.
Classes and Events
A new Collage and Photo Transfer class begins Wednesday, January 22 at Huntley Meadows. Click here for more information and to register.
My work will be up at Studio K in Hollin Hall through the end of January. Thanks to Kirsten McCullough for this great opportunity to exhibit in the community.
As I establish new routines for creative practice in January, I am thinking about ways that practice encourages me to show up and allows me to let things take the time they need. I'd love to hear about any new practices you are undertaking for 2020.
