Sharing and Connection
Pause, Peace and Connection
My goal with my artwork is to offer space for quiet contemplation, connection with others, and awe for our natural world. I believe that the value in art begins with the artist and expands outward through sharing, wonder and new associations.
Above is my earliest recorded visit to the base of the tree behind my house; the autumn colors drew me to it. The consistency and steadiness of this tree amid the changing and shifting forest below brings me back. In winter I might find ice formations. This summer I heard the rustle of cicadas emerging under the leaves. In between, when nothing remarkable seems to appear, I enjoy the familiarity of this spot. I continually marvel at the strength and size of the tree's roots and imagine all that extends underground and out of sight.
I hope my practices might inspire your own. One of my central practices this year has been attending to the seasonal changes. I've enjoyed hearing from readers who also attend to a spot in nature throughout the year. Often, these stories seem to begin with a favorite season and then expand to curiosity for the other seasons of the year.
In a similar way, I hope that my creations can offer connections on a deeper level for those seeking moments of peace and pause in nature. As our routines shift toward a balance with gatherings and time at home, I hope these connections are nurtured through your own observations and attention to the natural world.
My creations begin with practices which sustain me and I am honored when they find forms that resonate more broadly. Thank you for your notes, your purchases and the stories you share of gifts given and connections made.
